Ikä tuo ja vie edellytyksiä laadukkaaseen elämään. Ikääntyminen usein tuo riippumattomuutta, aikaa itselle, taloudellisia mahdollisuuksia ja kokemusta, mutta usein se vie toimintakykyä ja terveyttä. Tässä kirjassa lääketieteen ja kirurgian tohtori, emeritusprofessori Ilkka Vuori esittää tietoja keinoista, joita jokaisella on käytettävissään oman terveytensä ja toimintakykynsä säilyttämiseksi ikävuosien karttuessa. Kirjan tiedoista on hyötyä ikääntyville, heidän läheisilleen ja heitä hoitaville henkilöille.

Tärkein näistä keinoista on omat elintavat. Ja niillä on voimaa! Elintavat ovat perimmältään yksinkertaisia. Vähitellen niistä on kehittynyt hienojakoisia ja vaikeaselkoisia. Elintapoihin liittyviä tietoja, tuotteita ja palveluja markkinoidaan voimakkaasti. Niistä on vaikeaa erottaa terveyden ja toimintakyvyn kannalta tarpeellisia ja tarpeettomia, vaikuttavia ja vaikuttamattomia, tieteelliseen tietoon ja uskomuksiin perustuvia vaihtoehtoja.

Tässä kirjassa tarkastellaan elintapoja, joilla on vakuuttavasti osoitettu olevan edullisia tai haitallisia vaikutuksia terveyteen ja toimintakykyyn. Kirjassa kuvataan näiden elintapojen merkitystä toimintakyvylle ja terveydelle, ja esitetään suosituksia niiden käytöstä toimintaTerveelliset elintavat voivat antaa sekä vuosia elämään että elämää vuosiin kyvyn säilyttämisessä ja sairauksien ehkäisemisessä ja hoidossa. Professori Vuori painottaa viittä näkökohtaa. Terveiden elintapojen noudattaminen kannattaa aina, eivätkä muutokset parempaan ole milloinkaan myöhäisiä. Monet yksittäisten elintapojen vaikutukset ovat pieniä, mutta niiden kertyminen kasvattaa vaikutukset suuriksi. Useimpia näistä vaikutuksista ei voida saavuttaa muilla keinoilla. Terveelliset elintavat voidaan omaksua ja niitä voidaan noudattaa tavanomaisissa olosuhteissa ilman ylimääräisiä välineitä, varusteita, valmisteita tai kustannuksia, eivätkä ne edellytä sankarillisia suorituksia tai täydellisiä kieltäytymisiä – tupakointia lukuun ottamatta. Terveelliset elintavat voivat antaa sekä vuosia elämään että elämää vuosiin.

Ilkka Vuori (s. 1937) on tullut Suomessa ja kansainvälisesti tunnetuksi ”terveysliikunnan isänä” toiminnastaan liikunnan vaikutusten tutkijana ja liikunnan edistäjänä tehtävissään mm. professorina, UKK-instituutin ensimmäisenä johtajana ja lukuisissa kotimaisissa ja kansainvälisissä terveys- ja liikunta-alan järjestöissä. Vuori on julkaissut yli 300 tieteellistä artikkelia ja lukuisia kirjoja.

lkka Vuori (s. 1937) on tullut Suomessa ja kansainvälisesti tunnetuksi ”terveysliikunnan isänä” toiminnastaan liikunnan vaikutusten tutkijana ja liikunnan edistäjänä tehtävissään mm. professorina, UKK-instituutin ensimmäisenä johtajana ja lukuisissa kotimaisissa ja kansainvälisissä terveys- ja liikunta-alan järjestöissä. Vuori on julkaissut yli 300 tieteellistä artikkelia ja lukuisia kirjoja.
